As a result, they have been denied their right to participate in the democratic process. Mehala and Women\u2019s Aid have campaigned for practical changes to make the process work for survivors \u2013 including ensuring that a refuge manager can sign an application form for anonymous registration.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-282bcc99 elementor-section-stretched elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"282bcc99\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-settings=\"{&quot;background_background&quot;:&quot;classic&quot;,&quot;stretch_section&quot;:&quot;section-stretched&quot;}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-283c9a\" data-id=\"283c9a\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e9906e9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e9906e9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<header class=\"vc_cta3-content-header\"><h2>Campaign success<\/h2><\/header><p>On 7th March 2018 Women\u2019s Aid and Mehala <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/survivors-of-domestic-abuse-now-able-to-vote-anonymously\">welcomed important changes<\/a>\u00a0to the anonymous registration rules. The changes will make it easier for survivors to register to vote anonymously by:<\/p><ul><li>broadening the range of people able to formally certify that a survivor\u2019s safety is at risk (to include refuge managers, health professionals and police inspectors)<\/li><li>expanding the list of documentary evidence that survivors can provide.<\/li><\/ul><p>We have been pleased to have the support of Ministers, the Cabinet Office and Electoral Commission to make these reforms, and ensure survivors\u2019 voices are heard in our democracy. I had already been through enough, and to be disempowered even more was so difficult. I am so proud to have started the campaign that has led to these proposed change. Domestic abuse does not end when a relationship ends, and research consistently shows that women can be at risk long after they have escaped an abusive partner. For them anonymity is a matter of life or death; with the very real threat of being hunted down by the perpetrator.\n\n\nFollowing our Right to Vote campaign in partnership with survivor Mehala Osborne, we have worked with the government to bring about decisive action on this issue.
