Prevalence estimates released by the ONS do not rely on police reports (they are based on data from the Crime Survey for England and Wales) and these headline figures do not take into account important context and impact information, for example whether the violence caused fear, and who experienced multiple incidents. When these factors are taken into account the gendered nature of domestic abuse becomes clearer, and female victims are more likely to experience a greater number of abusive behaviours than male victims. ONS prevalence estimates also do not tell us the sex of the perpetrators.\u202f<\/p><p>As of 2025, the ONS included a new set of domestic abuse questions in the Crime Survey for England and Wales. The new questions\u202f provide an updated headline prevalence estimate of the number of people experiencing domestic abuse in the past year. In November 2024, the latest figures, to the year ending March 2024, found that nearly a third of women (30.3%) experienced domestic abuse since the age of 16. For men, the figure was around one in five (21.7%) (ONS, 2025a). The ONS introduced abuse scales, published in November 2025, to group together different types of victims that experience domestic abuse based on the abusive behaviours and their impacts, giving us the most accurate picture of domestic abuse to date. The abuse scales show that women experienced significantly higher rates of domestic abuse in Clusters 2 and 3 (which indicate medium and higher numbers of abusive behaviours and impacts) than men (ONS, 2025b).
