It is common for people to feel confused about what is happening, and to struggle with what to say and do to help. Each situation is different, and sadly, there are no perfect solutions. However, friends, family members, neighbours, and colleagues (informal supporters) have told us that dedicated support for people in<em>\u00a0their position\u00a0<\/em>would be helpful.<\/p><p>This website has been designed with informal supporters in mind. It provides information\u00a0 about\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/womensaid.org.uk\/information-support\/friends-and-family\/how-can-i-offer-support\/\">how you can help<\/a>, about <a href=\"https:\/\/womensaid.org.uk\/information-support\/friends-and-family\/services-and-resources\/\">UK-based\u00a0services and resources<\/a>, and about\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/womensaid.org.uk\/information-support\/friends-and-family\/looking-after-yourself\/\">how to look after yourself<\/a>. Her research received support from:<\/p><ul><li>Researchers\u00a0Emma Williamson\u00a0and\u00a0Gene Feder<\/li><li>Project partners <a href=\"https:\/\/holliegazzard.org\/\">Hollie Gazzard Trust<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/aafda.org.uk\/\">Advocacy After Fatal Domestic Abuse (AAFDA<\/a>)<\/li><li>Several members of the public who have supported a friend, family member, neighbour, or colleague experiencing domestic abuse<\/li><\/ul><p>The content of this website has been informed by findings from three different research studies:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bristol.ac.uk\/primaryhealthcare\/researchthemes\/outsidein.html\">On the outside looking in<\/a>, Supporting the supporters, and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bristol.ac.uk\/primaryhealthcare\/researchthemes\/building-resilience-in-forgotten-heroes\/\">Building resilience in the \u2018forgotten heroes\u2019<\/a>. In each of these studies, Alison carried out interviews and focus groups with people supporting female survivors of domestic abuse. Alison wanted to find out:<\/p><ol><li>people\u2019s experiences of offering support<\/li><li>the challenges and difficulties faced when offering support<\/li><li>the impacts on supporters<\/li><li>the needs of informal supporters<\/li><\/ol><p>The people Alison spoke to wanted this online handbook to raise public awareness and understanding of domestic abuse, and to equip people with information, tools, and strategies for offering support.
